Erica Joy Baker, the subject for our Fortune Magazine shoot, was running a bit late. David (the first assist/ DT for the shoot) and I had already scouted and set up a number of portrait locations throughout the company she works at, Patreon. We were ready whenever she was. While she was settling into her day we set a few lights up around her desk and photographed her settling into her day. The photos are a mess. There are funny shadows and some misfires… but then in the middle of the failing and the chaos we shot this photo. It’s one of my favorites.90% of editorial photography is, for me, making something awesome from something that isn't otherwise interesting. I love that challenge. A long time ago I gave up trying to make good images. I don't really care anymore if the image is good or bad. I show up. Bring lights. Watch the energy of the people there and notice the details. I try to get lost in it all, recording as I go.
